Organize your House with Cardboard

This is the craziest moving year of all time since I have been born in the United States.  The housing market is going way crazier than the pre-2008 housing bust.  People are now buying and selling so fast most houses in my state are on teh market for 2 days or less.  The fact is that interest rates are crazy low and people are able to sell at high prices.  In many cases, people are moving to better neighborhoods and for the same price with a better house.  This has led a lot of people to move in a rush and for us, we ended up moving into the worst house in the best neighborhood in the state.  This was a wild idea, but we knew that if we fixed it up we could afford to live there.  So we moved into a working wreck and had to find a way to organize while working.

This was not the easiest of tasks because we were constantly working on rooms in the home.  We found ourselves really struggling for a few months because of all the chaos that was always going on.  We could not afford to have anyone help us so we had to do all the work on our own and since it was winter we had to do it all inside.  This meant that we dedicated rooms to be workrooms and had to work on finishing rooms that we could live in and stay alive happily.  This was not a super easy task and we ended up in a cluttered mess.  But one asset we had was a ton of these cheap moving boxes in our garage which were piled to the ceiling.

It was our goal to take all of our clutter and make a system of cheap moving boxes to act as shelving.  It was based on the back end of stores like Target where they use cardboard to pretty much store every single item they have.  Instead of using big metal shelves we would simply stack the boxes and cut holes in the front to get easy access to the items inside.  We knew this would work because we had seen other people do it and we thought that if we could take one entire room and make it storage then we could probably free up two other rooms if we kept things nice and clean and tidy.  It was a bit of a risk, but since the cost was only going to be the time we took a day to do it.

We started to organize things by type and usefulness.  If it was super useful we put it in boxes easy to reach.  If the stack was not going to have holes cut in the front we put the most useful items in the top box so we could get to it really fast.  It was the opposite of nonimportant items.  This allowed us to not only be super organized but also to really change the free space in our home.  We were able to knock out the extra two rooms much faster since all the stuff was out of them.  Construction was so much more simple and our home got finished faster.  So don't throw away the things you can use.  And don't think you need to buy super expensive stuff either.
